“The jasmine has popped!”

This was how a fellow student at my yoga class acknowledged the arrival of spring. Though it wasn’t the jasmine I noticed first but a cherry blossom tree (not sure about the ‘cherry’ though) on Douglas Street with the full moon rising. It was early September so the flowers were right on time.

Also the first channel-billed cuckoo flew over, squawking—another sign spring was here.
The “popped” jasmine I smelt a bit later, piled over a back fence down the street.

People have mixed feelings about jasmine (Jasminum officinale) because it can swamp, climbing over anything. I remember we had jasmine at home. Our house, on a steep downward sloping block, had a bridge from the street to the front door and Mum planted jasmine to climb over the railing. It was there for years until the mass looked a mess and someone cut it out.
