Field flowers allowed to grow! Oh, for the death of the ‘prefect’ monoculture lawn. Who indoctrinated us to think that a single species grass lawn was a high point of gardening prowess? I could be suspicious of all the companies that benefit from the sale of tools, chemicals etc. that aid the avid lawn lover in keeping the lawn in line, in singularity, in non-biodiversity. Michael Marder, in studying Hildegarde von Bingen’s writings highlights two opposing states of being; viriditas and ariditas; “the forest and the desert, the revitalising power of the viriditas and the deadly force of ariditas…” (p.7 Green Mass)
Monoculture is akin to desert.
